Character of Appreciative Inquiry

character of Appreciative Inquiry

Appreciative Inquiry concentrates on the strengths of the organization. Success is identified and appreciated. Success patterns are analyzed, in order to reproduce them for further success, and in order to find solutions to master complex change.

The method’s motto is “do more of what works well.” Appreciative Inquiry can be used for small and large groups as well as for whole organizations. It is a prerequisite of this method that the management be well-versed in using positive thinking.

Structure of Appreciative Inquiry

Structure of Appreciative Inquiry

Appreciative Inquiry consists of 4 phases:

1. Discovery (Inquiring and Understanding)
2. Dream (Envisioning)
3. Design
4. Destiny (Implementation)

The basis of Appreciative Inquiry is the interview in the Discovery phase. Strengths, assets, and everything that works well in the organization is identified and explored. Success stories from the past and present are collected, and patterns are analyzed. It’s about understanding the mechanism of the organization’s success and its power to use this for the approaching complex change.

In the Dream phase, everyone envisions what they want to achieve. What is the goal of the change? What should be different afterwards? Which past and current strengths will be supportive in the future? Visions are developed and a mutually committed direction is finalised.

During the Design phase, this direction is translated into provocative statements about the future, thereby making tangible the previously developed vision of the future. The vision becomes a bridge between the present and the desired future.

Finally, during the Destiny phase, action plans are set. What will be the consequences of the formulated statements about processes, procedures, structure, product, culture, customers, etc.? Where to start, how to start, what comes later? Finally, agreements are made about how to transfer the positive thinking of Appreciative Inquiry into the organization.
