Character of Future Search

Character of Future Search

To gather the various and divergent interests, goals, opinions, values and perspectives of all stakeholders and to build a common understanding among them is the core of Future Search. With this as the foundation, the direction of the organization is developed and decided upon. This happens based on a developed consensus. This very step of arriving at consensus is what leads to the full commitment of the stakeholders.

Thus, Future Search works well to focus stakeholders with divergent views on a common goal. The method requires a process of 16 hours in 2,5 days in order to achieve this.

Structure of Future Search

Structure of Future Search

Future Search consists of 5 phases:
1. Past
2. Interior and exterior status quo
3. Vision/Goals
4. Consensus
5. Action Plan

Participants work alternately in homogeneous and heterogeneous groups.

Phases 1. Past, and 2. Interior and exterior status quo, are used to collect information, to identify current trends and developments as well as to engage in a dialogue. A common understanding and overall “systemic” picture of the reality of the organization are generated. At the same time, common ground is built, and the “silo mentality” weakened.

Phase 3. Vision/Goals is about creating a picture of an ideal future and to form respective goals that move in that direction. Action areas are defined and change approaches are visualised.

In Phase 4. Consensus, all stakeholders decide upon common goals. Every participant has the right of veto. There are no exceptions. As a result, the coming actions will have long lasting effect.

Phase 5. Action Plan, is the last phase of Future Search, and is about developing detailed action plans.
